The information in this article also applies to Project Online Desktop Client and Visio Online Plan 2 (previously named Visio Pro for Office 365), which are licensed separately from Microsoft 365 Apps.

If you remove a user's license (for example, if the user leaves your organization), any installations of Microsoft 365 Apps that the user had will go into reduced functionality mode. The Office Licensing Service, a part of Microsoft 365, keeps track of which users are licensed and how many computers they've installed Office on.

If you have a subscription for Azure AD Premium P1 and above, or an edition of Office 365 Enterprise E3 or Office 365 A3 or Office 365 GCC G3 and above, you can use group-based licensing with Azure AD. You can assign one or more product licenses to a group, and Azure AD ensures that the licenses are assigned to all members of the group. Any new members who join the group are assigned the appropriate licenses. When they leave the group, those licenses are removed. For more information, see Group-based licensing in Azure Active Directory.

After a user is assigned a license, you can deploy Office to your users or your users can install Office directly from the Office 365 portal. If the user hasn't been assigned a license, the user can't install Office from the Office 365 portal. We recommend assigning the license 24 hours prior to the deployment so you can ensure that the license is provisioned.

Microsoft 365 Apps communicates with the Office Licensing Service and the Activation and Validation Service to obtain and activate a product key. Each day, or each time the user logs on to their computer, the computer connects to the Activation and Validation Service to verify the license status and extend the product key. As long as the computer can connect to the internet at least once every 30 days, Microsoft 365 Apps remains fully functional. If the computer goes offline for more than 30 days, Microsoft 365 Apps enters reduced functionality mode until the next time a connection can be made. To get Microsoft 365 Apps fully functional again, the user can connect to the internet and let the Activation and Validation Service reactivate the installation, though in some cases the user may have to sign back in first.

If the user hasn't been assigned a license, and they try to use Microsoft 365 Apps on a computer where it's installed, it will be in reduced functionality mode. Also, the user will be prompted to sign in and activate every time they open an app, such as Word or Excel.

If this is the first time you're installing Microsoft 365, you may have to complete a set of pre-installation steps first or you may need to follow different steps than what's contained below. What you do depends if your copy of Microsoft 365 is an Office for home or an Office for business product and whether or not you have a product key you have to redeem, an existing account associated with Microsoft 365, or a pre-assigned license.

If your Office for business subscription plan includes the desktop version of the Microsoft 365 apps you won't see an option to install it unless someone in your organization assigned a license to you.

Learn how to check this in What Microsoft 365 business product or license do I have? or if you're a Microsoft 365 admin responsible for assigning licenses to people in your organization, see Assign licenses to users.

If you're the Microsoft 365 admin of an Office for business plan, users in your organization can only install Microsoft 365 using the steps in this topic as long as your plan includes the desktop version of Microsoft 365, and you've assigned the user a license and given them permission to install Microsoft 365 (Manage software download settings in Microsoft 365).

The Rental license allows the installation of software products on a single computer and remains fully valid for a limited period, e.g. 90 or 365 days after the first start of the software. Once the Rental license has expired, the purchase of a full license will enable the further use of the software. The Rental license is often part of Starter Kit packages and cannot be ordered separately.Rental Licenses may be the right choice for an extensive trial and evaluation phase with no limitations on functionality or performance especially when the interaction with hardware components is tested.

With a Single license, you can install and run software products without restrictions on a single computer. The license, together with the software, is stored locally on the computer and cannot be transferred to other computers.Single Licenses are the standard license type for Runtime Software like WinCC Runtime Advanced.Typically a single computer is part of a fixed configuration where it solves a task by running a certain licensed software module permanently.

Subscription licenses are either role-based or core-based subscriptions. A single license key can be purchased with all roles and features and this license is called an Updatable Subscription License (USL). Only one key needs to be activated on Tableau Server to represent the entire purchase.

A role-based license allows you to deploy Tableau Server on a single computer or on multiple computers in a cluster. Each user that accesses Tableau Server must be licensed and assigned a role. Administrators can add users based on available licenses of each type.

A core-based license imposes no constraints on the number of user accounts in Tableau Server. Instead, the license specifies the maximum number of computer cores on which you can run Tableau Server. You can install Tableau Server on a single computer or across multiple computers as a multi-node cluster, as long as the total number of cores in all the computers does not exceed the total number that the license allows.

Not all processes installed with Tableau Server impact the calculation of total number of cores used. A subset of processes is considered "licensed processes." Core licensing is calculated only on computers running licensed processes. If a computer has one or more licensed processes installed on it, the cores on that computer count toward the total cores used. For more information about licensed processes, see Licensed processes. 2ff7e9595c
